Yes, in case anybody is wondering I finally watched 50/50. As just about anyone on Tumblr knows, this is a film that follows two best friends whose lives are changed by a cancer diagnosis. What I wasn’t expecting from this film though, is it’s uncanny way of developing it’s story around friendship, love, survival, and even finding humor in the most unlikely of places.
I couldn’t help but to feel as though Jospeh Gordon-Levitt turns depression and despair into comedy of the edgiest kind; while making his character all the more sympathetic for his occasional outbursts of anger and aggression. The absence of self-pity and sentimentality are a change, but to the film’s defense, it’s an everyman tale with so much heart and honesty. As far as I’m concerned, chances are 9/10 that just about anybody with a modest taste for dark humor will enjoy 50/50.
